Reindeer Doo-Doo As Holiday Ornaments

Yeah, you read that right. Some enterprising folks at the Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington, IL figured out a way to make reindeer poop pay…in a big way.

They take a dropping (which, it turns out, is very small considering the size of Santa’s sleigh-pullers) dry it, clear-coat it and then roll it in paint or glitter and sell it as a tree decoration for $5.

The zoo’s marketing director lives up to her title by naming the droppings “magical reindeer gem ornaments” and you even get a certificate of authenticity, though I’m not sure why.

This whole thing is the fault of the zoo director’s grandmother, but you’ll have to read the story to find out why.

Now I know what to do with the mess my dog has made out of my backyard. Fair warning to family and friends; you know what to expect this holiday season…Magical Wolf Garland Ornaments!

Kindle A Year Later

CNN had a piece up yesterday about the Kindle a year after its release. You might recall that I posted about the possible effect and/or alternative of e-readers on traditional book sales last week.

I found the statement about J.K. Rowling to be typical of the vigorous debate among both writers and readers regarding the form of traditional books.

“Blockbuster writers such as J.K. Rowling, author of the “Harry Potter” series, have said they’ll never allow their books to appear on the market in electronic form.”

I have a feeling that, within the next generation, that reticence will fall as younger readers who have grown up on digitized formats of most of their entertainment will make an electronic format mandatory.

Of course, there will always be those who, for whatever reason, will cling to the concept of hardbound books. I’m reminded of the Star Trek (Original Series) episode “Court Martial”, in which Captain Kirk’s defense attorney, Samuel T. Cogley, is a man who eschews digitized law books and has an office filled with hardbound tomes, an anomaly of huge proportions in the 23rd century. Kirk’s line; “You have to be either an obsessive crackpot who’s escaped from his keeper, or Samuel T. Cogley, attorney at law.” points out how out of place Cogley is in preferring actual books to their electronic versions.

Not sure if I would qualify (at least under that definition) as a crackpot, but I can understand the appeal of actual books I hold in my hand. However, especially with all the traveling I do, the convenience of being able to carry several books with me somewhere to read in one little device is also very appealing.

Going To The Arch On Saturday

Ok, I’ve made my plans to drive over to St. Louis early Saturday morning to go to the arch. My co-worker has bowed out because she wants to sleep in. Slacker.

Going early means I’ll have to leave Jefferson City around 6:30 for the 2-hour drive over. This should get me there between 8:30 and 9:00 which I’m hoping allows me to catch some good shots while the early morning sun is rising in the east. Plus, being early and being almost winter, I’m told the crowds at the arch will be minimal, which is perfect as far as I’m concerned.

Then I may take one of the Mississippi Riverboat rides, both for the fun of it and for the educational tour given by the National Park Rangers. Oh and the chance to get more photos from a different perspective.

The weather forecast is for a high of 45, but of course that’s at 2-3pm so it will be colder than that in the morning, plus it is supposed to be windy. No precipitation is predicted, but between the temperature and the wind I’ll most likely wear my thermal underwear, a long-sleeve shirt, my windbreaker, heavier coat, wool cap and, of course, gloves when I’m not trying to take photos. Especially since I’m sure it will be colder and windier on the riverboat.

By the way, this recently released report says that a magnitude 7 or higher earthquake in this region would cause catastrophic damage. I have this picture in mind of the arch cracking and perhaps even being destroyed by such an occurrence. I hope it doesn’t happen while I’m up inside there Saturday.

Oldies Station Cool 97.5

Whenever I arrive in a new city, one of the first things I do when I get my rental car is scan the local radio broadcasts looking for an oldies station.

Here in Jefferson City, Missouri, KJMO Cool 97.5 is one of the BEST oldies stations I have heard in my travels around the country so far. They use the TRUE OLDIES syndicated show with DJ extraordinaire Scott Shannon as part of their programming, and that is a great oldies show, but they still play some of the best old music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, including a lot of forgotten hits.

And to put the icing on the cake, the other day they played my favorite holiday song. It’s one that is especially appropriate now that I’m away from home; “All I Want For Christmas, Is you” by Mariah Carey.

Bucked, Bruised And Bloodied

This story from the local paper here in Jefferson City about a deer who got a little revenge caused me to laugh.

Wounded deer attacks on hunter who shot him

Published: Tuesday, December 2, 2008 9:14 AM CST

SEDALIA, Mo. (AP) – A Sedalia hunter bagged a big buck on the second day of firearms season, but the kill caused him a lot of pain.

Forty-nine-year-old Randy Goodman said he thought two well-placed shots with his .270-caliber rifle had killed the buck on Nov. 19. Goodman said the deer looked dead to him, but seconds later the nine-point, 240-pound animal came to life.

The buck rose up, knocked Goodman down and attacked him with his antlers in what the veteran hunter called “15 seconds of hell.” The deer ran a short distance and went down, and died after Goodman fired two more shots.

Soon Goodman started feeling dizzy and noticed his vest was soaked in blood.

So he reached his truck and drove to a hospital, where he received seven staples in his scalp and was treated for a slight concussion and bruises.

Yeah, he got his buck, because bullets give every hunter an uneven edge, but that deer made him pay for it!

Here’s my one and only hunting story. When I was 15 I went to visit a friend who had moved from Miami, Florida to rural Georgia. In keeping with his surroundings and new neighbors and friends, he had taken up “hunting”, specifically squirrel hunting with a new friend. They asked me if I wanted to go and I said “Sure” because it sounded exciting. Though I had never hunted anything prior to this, I didn’t feel all that inexperienced because they hadn’t done much more than me, having only been out hunting twice prior to our outing. In those two outings they had returned home empty handed both times.

So out the three of us went with one double-barreled shotgun and one .22 rifle between us, the plan being to rotate the guns around as we hunted. I was told by my more experienced fellow hunters that the one with the shotgun would shoot the squirrel nest, which was usually found about 30 feet up in a tree. If a squirrel or squirrels were inside, this blast would scare them out of the nest and the squirrel would fall to the ground at which time the one with the rifle would shoot the squirrel. The odd man out would simply be watching as this all unfolded, waiting for his turn at manliness.

Since I was the “guest” I was given the shotgun and my friend’s friend had the rifle for our first approach to a tree nest we spotted. I aimed the shotgun and pulled the trigger, blowing the nest to pieces. But it was empty. Still, I thought it was so cool that I had shot at “something” and hit it! But now it was time to rotate the guns around and find our next nest.

So, with my friend armed with the rifle and his friend armed with the shotgun, we approached a tree and, looking high up into its branches, spotted a nest. My friend’s friend positioned himself beneath the tree, the shotgun aimed at the base of the nest; my friend raised the rifle to his shoulder and sighted along its barrel, ready for the unlucky rodent to fall to the ground. I stood back behind them both, interested in seeing how this whole hunting thing worked.

“Ba boom!!”, the loud retort of the shotgun was quickly followed by the nest above us flying apart in small pieces and a larger, squirming-in-midair-piece joined the remnants of its former home in hitting the ground, lying still. My friend adjusted his aim to center on the now homeless squirrel and fired, “Crack!”, but the once-still form had suddenly leapt up and, by instinct that all squirrels seem to possess, began climbing back up the trunk of the tree as fast as its dazed and befuddled mind would allow.

At this point, standing back and watching, I was laughing at my friend’s poor aim and thinking that this particular turn was over. Next it would be my turn to have the rifle and maybe shoot a squirrel.

But at that very moment my friend’s friend suddenly determined in his mind that this squirrel was not going to escape if he had anything to say about it. I watched him swiftly raise the shotgun, aim at the fleeing squirrel who was racing up the tree trunk and, “Ba boom!!”, he unloaded the second barrel.

The squirrel suddenly took flight, arcing out and away from the tree, first a little higher than his height on the trunk and then falling like the little gray lump of fur that he was. The three of us were whooping and high-fiving each other as we walked to the brush where it had landed, but as we approached we grew silent.

The shotgun blast had literally blown the ass off the little guy and he was a bloody mess, but he was still alive and thrashing about in obvious pain. We all watched for a moment and my friend’s friend said, “He’ll die in a minute” but he didn’t and after a few more moments I could not stand to watch him in agony any longer. I picked up a heavy fallen branch and hit the squirrel in the head, killing him.

I walked away from the sight in silent disgust with myself and it was at that very moment that I realized I was never going to be a sport hunter.

The St. Louis Arch

I’m hoping to visit the St. Louis arch before I leave Missouri. My co-worker wants to go also, but she has been on a vacation this past week, so I guess the earliest I’ll get to see it will be this Saturday or Sunday. I’m really looking forward to getting to the top and taking some photos.

Now, you might find this amusing, but I’m a little embarrassed by it. My entire life, for whatever reason, I have thought that the arch actually spanned the Mississippi River, with one end on the Missouri side and one end on the Illinois side. I don’t know if I misinterpreted a picture when I was a kid or if someone told me that or what, but that is the image I have always had in my mind. Apparently I’ve never seen or heard anything that would change that impression, until I arrived here.

Those of you who are more well-informed than yours truly will know that the entire arch is on the Missouri side.

Well, I won’t ever make that mistake again.

Remembering My Dad

Nine years ago today, my dad passed away. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him. Sometimes it’s something he taught me to do (and sometimes NOT to do) by word or example; sometimes it’s a memory, good or bad, of our life together; and sometimes it’s just missing him.

I guess that last one is something that won’t ever change.

“…Descends The Snow”

Out of the bosom of the air,
Out of the cloud-folds of her garments shaken,
Over the woodlands brown and bare,
Over the harvest-fields forsaken,
Silent, and soft, and slow
Descends the snow

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The wind blew so hard and so long last night that snow was not only on the tops, hoods and trunks of cars in the hotel parking lot, but it was also plastered on the sides like wet cement that was partially hardened. When I finally pried my driver’s side door open, a big chunk of snow broke off the area where the door and top meet and fell into my seat. Grrrr. It’s obvious that I need to buy an ice scraper and brush to use while I’m here.

The temperature has stayed low enough that, even in the middle of the day, when I walked out to my car to go to lunch there was STILL snow caked on the edges of my windshield.

My co-worker returned from her vacation today, but was so sick she had to leave halfway through the day. I’m feeling better and trying to stay that way, but this office is like a disease-incubator. Most people I see are using antiseptic wipes and/or Purell liquid hand sanitizer, but this crud just keeps going around.

We get a slight warmup tomorrow to the mid-40’s and then the forecast is for snow on Wednesday.

Going Home For Christmas

I’ll be getting to go home for Christmas for a few days. Not long enough to bother buying a tree and getting out the decorations, but Cindy and I will at least have the holiday together and I will get to see the kids and grandkids.

I’m a real Christmas junkie. I love the time of year, the music, the decorations, getting and giving gifts, egg nog and mince pie, lol. In the past, we’ve always bought a tree on the Friday after Thanksgiving, put up the house decorations and then decorated the tree on Saturday or Sunday after giving the tree a day or so to “fall out” so its branches are fully spread. And we always try to get most of the gift shopping done as early as possible.

But the past two years have been different for both of us with me on the road. Though Cindy and Amber got a tree and decorated it last year, Cindy has decided not to bother getting a full-size tree this year. Instead she’s already bought a small, live, table-top sized tree and put a few decorations on it and gifts under it. The house wasn’t decorated last year and won’t be again this year, but at least we’ll have a few days together at home. And though the gift shopping isn’t done yet, we did manage to get the holiday cards bought, addressed and stamped before I left for Missouri and Cindy mailed them out today. Last year, when I was in Louisiana, we didn’t get ANY cards mailed out, so that’s an improvement, lol.

In the meantime, we just keep visualizing our future holidays in our cabin in the mountains.

Snowing In Jefferson City

A light snowfall began last night around 11:15. I watched it gently fall through the darkness just outside my third floor hotel room. Although I know it is nothing more than a common meteorological occurrence, there is also something almost magical about watching those white flakes drift out of the darkness above and slowly descend past you to the ground below.

Here’s some pictures of the view from my room this 7 this morning. Right after taking a few pictures, I got back in bed and under the covers. Brrrr…just looking at it made me cold.

The snow stopped falling around 10 this morning, then began falling heavily again around 1:30 this afternoon. In fact, it’s a LOT heavier with larger flakes and being blown at an angle like a blizzard! Still, most of it is melting as it lands on the streets and sidewalks, so hopefully it won’t be an issue when driving to work tomorrow morning.

I’m In Hockey Country

The rain started about 6pm tonight and I got wet when I went out about 8pm to watch my boss play in a pick-up hockey game and take some photos of the game. Although they were playing in a rink, I knew it would be cold. I just didn’t expect it to be almost as cold as it was outside. But at least it wasn’t raining in the rink. I wore my long underwear leggings, T-shirt, long sleeve shirt, lined windbreaker with hood and my heavy winter jacket and was still cold. My Florida blood is too thin for this, lol.

Due to the rain it has, of course, been wet outside and the roads were starting to get a little slick and slippery. I imagine by tomorrow morning there will be some ice. Snow is forecast for later tonight and all day tomorrow and perhaps part of Monday morning. If they’re right, we shouldn’t get more than 1-2 inches. I hope they’re right.

Anyway, here’s one of my shots from tonight. I took almost 500 but a quick scan through them tells me I’ll only end up keeping a small fraction of those 500. A lot of them are garbage but it’s ok, I learned some things tonight while shooting the game that will help me do better in the future.

E-Mail Euphoria

I love the day after a holiday at work, especially when other agencies or partner groups are closed in the midst of a 4-day holiday like Thanksgiving. Today I actually had an empty e-mail inbox by 11am. Of course more started pouring in at 11:02, but it was a nice feeling of accomplishment for about 2 minutes.

Gmail Themes

Has anyone else been using the Gmail themes that Google has in beta offering?

I decided on the mountain theme, since that’s where I’ll be living in the future.

And what a pleasant surprise! I thought it would be a static background image of the same mountain picture day in and day out, but it’s dynamic; changing at least once a day.

Still, I may go back to the plain ol’ Gmail because I’m just not all that much into themes in my email program.

How about you? Do you like them and use them?

What I Did Thanksgiving Day

Well, my cold left me finding it difficult to concentrate enough to write much of anything. As a result, other than a walk down to the lobby to get some turkey, dressing and candied yams, I spent the rest of the day lying on the couch in my hotel room watching “Dreamgirls”, “Cloverfield” and “Hellboy II”, reading a bit and napping off and on through the day.

The bright spot was a phone call from my grandkids. Hearing “Hi Granddad” always lifts my spirits.

Thanksgiving 2008

I have a lot to be thankful for.

I have a loving wife who makes my life absolutely fantastic; there are a lot of people who have no one or worse, have someone who makes them miserable. I have a job; there are a lot of folks that want one who don’t. I have a roof over my head and a warm bed to sleep in; some people have an alley for a bed and a newspaper for a blanket. I have family and friends in my life that brighten my existence; some out there have no one to bring gladness and joy into their lives.

Do I wish I was home with my wife today? Sure. But at least I’m not thousands of miles away being shot at or bombed like those who serve our country. Would I like to be enjoying a sumptuous meal with my family today? Of course. But it won’t be as bad as last year when I was stuck in a hotel room in Lake Charles, LA eating a nuked frozen TV dinner of turkey and dressing because no restaurants in that podunk town were open and it certainly won’t be as bad as those who have very little or nothing to eat. Today I’ll get to actually go enjoy a nice, hot prepared turkey dinner here at the hotel.

Before the family sits down to eat today, my mother-in-law will ask for everyone’s attention and once they have all quieted down, she’ll ask them to quietly remember the things they have to be thankful for, just like she does every Thanksgiving.

I hope you’ll do the same.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Working Sick

At least 50% of the people in my office are sick. In between the noise of phones ringing, printers running and TVs tuned to the all-news channels are the constant sounds of coughing, sneezing, sniffling and moaning.

I have been doing my best to not fall victim. I’ve been doubling up my vitamin intake, eating healthy, staying hydrated, wiping down my work surfaces with antibacterial wipes, trying not to touch common areas with my hands and, when I’ve had no choice in touching them, washing my hands frequently with soap and water or Purell hand sanitizer.

Still, when the very air you’re breathing is densely populated with all the nasty little buggers from people sneezing and coughing, your only viable defenses would be to wear a surgical mask, gloves and goggles or either just not come to work.

Not come to work. In most cases that would be the sensible answer and advice for people who are sick. Officially, we urge people who are sick to stay in the hotel rooms and get better, but realistically the fact is that most of us perform specialized tasks and duties. If we’re not here, the work doesn’t get done. And a lot of the time our work is deadline driven; if our work doesn’t get done in a timely fashion it negatively impacts someone else’s ability to get their work done in a timely fashion and so on and so forth. It can become a snowball of ever-growing problems. So, sick or not, if we can walk or sit upright in a chair for a sustained period of time, we show up for work.

Last night when I got off work and returned to my room, I finally felt myself succumbing to symptoms of an impending cold. My eyes were starting to feel like they were surrounded by grains of sand, my sinuses began simultaneously draining and feeling stuffed up, and a general malaise that I could not push off as just being tired was growing in my body. I immediately started taking some cold medicine, even going so far as to place a dose on my nightstand and setting my alarm to wake up at the 4-hour mark so I could take more in the middle of the night.

It may be working. I know I’m not feeling nearly as bad as most of my sick co-workers and my symptoms, while aggravating, do not seem to be as pronounced as the ones I have seen them display. Here’s hoping I’ve been able to hit it hard enough and early enough to reduce the extent of its effect on me.

UPDATE: The office Thanksgiving luncheon was tolerable. The absolute best part was that there was so much food left over that we donated it to a local women’s shelter to contribute to a better Thanksgiving Day celebration for them.

Older Than Dirt

This was surprising, because we normally don’t allow staff to wear “slogan” shirts or pants, but yesterday morning I saw a worker walking through the office wearing a T-shirt I want.

It read, “Older Than Dirt-Genuine American Antique”

Economy Drives Book Sales Down

I receive a variety of book and book-business related e-mails and RSS feeds and they are all in agreement that the downturn of the economy has resulted in a likewise direction for book sales at all the major retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Borders and Books-a-Million. Even with all the 40% off coupons and offers I receive from various booksellers, it is still hard to justify the expense of a hardback (and sometimes even a paperback) book when personal operating funds are on the low side, especially for a “pleasure read.”

Amazon offers some really good price breaks, but I always try to get that total over $25 to qualify for the free shipping. In doing so, I’m still shelling out more money than I’m comfortable with for anything other than a gift for someone else or a “professional” book that contributes to my writing.

But I think Cindy had the right idea a year ago when she asked me for a Kindle for Christmas; e-books are an economical way to keep up with your reading “fix”, especially for those books we read only for pleasure. The MOST EXPENSIVE BOOKS Cindy has downloaded would be brand new bestsellers for $9.99, the majority of others are $5 to $7 each and some are even less. When you consider that a hardback bestseller can typically go for $30, it’s easy to see the appeal of the e-book format, over and above the convenience of storage and transportation. I think her Kindle paid for itself after the 20th book download she purchased.

In addition, among writers there is a lot of discussion going on about moving from print and web formats to e-book formats and self-publishing. Quite a few writers have gone that route, selling their creations directly through their websites. It’s not nearly as lucrative as having an in-demand print book on the shelves, but it’s a more immediate positive feedback and not nearly as many roadblocks to getting out a dead tree creation.

What do you think? Would you consider utilizing a $350 Kindle or other e-book reader if it allowed you to enjoy your reading needs (or wants, lol) at a reduced cost in the long run? How about purchasing a writer’s work directly from them in an e-book form?
